Shanghai Cancer Institute (hereinafter referred to as “SCI”) started to enroll graduate students in 1979, successively relying on Shanghai Second Medical University (now Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine), School of Basic Medical Sciences and School of Public Health of Shanghai Medical University, School of Basic Medical Sciences and School of Public Health of Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University (SMCFU), Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and School of Biomedical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Currently, SCI enrolls graduate students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (Renji Hospital, majoring in biology and oncology, School of Public Health, majoring in public health and preventive medicine), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (School of Biomedical Engineering, majoring in biology and biomedical engineering). There are 24 graduate student supervisors (14 doctoral supervisors and 10 master supervisors), 65 graduate students (41 doctoral students and 24 master students).

During the stay in SCI, graduate students should pay attention to the study of basic theories and professional knowledge and strive to improve their abilities and shape their values. To stimulate the enthusiasm of graduate students and support original scientific research, the State Key Laboratory of Oncogenes and Related Genes (SKLORG) has established the “Evaluation System for Scientific Research of Graduate Students” to assess the research and reward graduate students every year. SCI attaches great importance to not only the creation of an academic atmosphere (for example, SCI regularly carries out academic activities for graduate students and asks graduate students to actively participate in the Cancer Forum of SCI), but also the improvement of the study and living environment of graduate students. Besides, SCI strives to improve the conditions of food and accommodation, and has constructed basketball courts and table tennis rooms. In addition, graduate branch activities and collective activities are carried out integratedly, enriching the spare time of graduate students and cultivating their sense of collective honor and national identity.
